Vegilicious is becoming ProVeg

Muriel News

In June 2018 we will officially join ProVeg International and become ProVeg South Africa. ProVeg, which was born out of VEBU (Vegetarierbund Deutschland), has almost 150 years of experience in the vegan food awareness and advocacy space, and is expanding globally with chapters in Germany, the UK, Spain, Poland and the Netherlands, and more to expansions underway.

The ProVeg vision is a world where everyone chooses delicious and healthy food that is good for all humans, animals, and our planet. Their mission is to reduce the global consumption of animals by 50% by the year 2040. Many of the world’s most urgent problems share a common cause: our food choices. ProVeg International is the first internationally recognised organisation that is dedicated to raising awareness of how we can tackle these problems through diet: so that our food choices can become a multi-problem solution.

In partnering with ProVeg International, we aim to significantly increase the scope of our advocacy, and introduce larger national and international campaigns to the South African vegan movement. With the backing of an international organisation with a proven track record, we’ll have a stronger voice when we engage with the food industry and government. Collaboration between countries will also give us more opportunities for knowledge-sharing, and we’ll be able to expand successful campaigns across a larger area.

Read about the planned internationalisation in the FAQ below.

The vegan movement has gained a lot of momentum globally in recent years. The possibility of a societal shift towards a more sustainable, nutritious and animal-friendly dietary lifestyle is becoming increasingly realistic in many parts of the world.

While there are many organisations that focus on human rights, environmental and animal protection at a local or global level, there are no other globally active organisations that have plant-based advocacy as their primary focus.

By joining ProVeg International and the other organisations under its umbrella, it will be easier to exchange valuable knowledge and experiences, and increase the influence of the vegan movement around the world.

This opportunity for cooperation is particularly important in countries where the consumption of animal products is still increasing, such as South Africa. In a global food system it is necessary to look beyond borders. With ProVeg International we want to take an important step towards unifying the  international vegan food awareness movement.
